“We just want people to know that science is hands-on and it’s for everyone,” Johnson says. “If you want to do it, we’ll support you and provide the resources and the space to succeed.”

Sam Behseta has driven the success of the statistics program at NSM, and his grant collaborations have been transformational for students.
The keys are to help students learn how to learn, believe in their own potential, and connect with successful mentors who are following a similar path.
“Exposing students to what it’s like to be in different kinds of labs reinforces the idea that if you are a math or science student, there is more to those fields than you realize,” says Merri Lynn Casem, chair and professor of biological science.
