When it comes to drawing valuable support and funding for Cal State Fullerton, the College of Natural Sciences & Mathematics and the College of Engineering & Computer Science’s development team is unmatched. To enhance and broaden their capabilities, the team welcomed Alex Choperena as associate director of development for NSM and ECS on March 13, 2023.
Connecting Where It Counts
In addition to a background in STEM, Choperena has over five years of relevant experience in development that includes campaigns for the Orangewood Foundation and Samueli Academy. Having lived in Southern California during his childhood, he’s also familiar with the high standards of education and research opportunities that CSUF offers students.
“I’m always drawn to organizations that provide opportunity and access to those who seek it,” Choperena says. “CSUF is a terrific example of providing this equity in higher learning by offering world-class education that’s accessible to all.”
He’s particularly excited to contribute to NSM and ECS successes, noting, “STEM is a fantastic path that has a tangible impact on the world. It opens doors to opportunities that haven’t even been thought of yet.”

Alex Choperena, associate director of development for NSM and ECS
In his new role, Choperena will work with supporters to deepen the impact of existing academic programs and create new ones with an eye toward the future of STEM.
“I get to learn about what drives our donors – how they think about science, what collegiate experiences impacted them, and what areas they’re passionate about – and connect it to the current and aspirational work of our colleges,” Choperena says. “We have so many programs, scholarships, and projects to support here that there’s something for everyone.”
Understanding supporters’ passions isn’t just essential for effective development efforts; it’s something that brings Choperena joy. He notes that alumni have valuable perspectives and experiences to offer, saying, “Each one has something they’re excited about that they believe will make a difference. I love hearing about those passions and being a conduit to help realize supporters’ visions.”
A Focus on Alumni
In terms of long-term goals, Choperena emphasizes alumni relationships. “The general upside-downness of the last few years has meant that many people have lost touch with each other, particularly alumni who graduated in the last decade,” he says. “That group is rapidly advancing in their fields and could bring powerful energy and inspiration to our students. I’d love to reconnect them with the colleges – and each other.”
Outside work, Choperena is passionate about Notre Dame football, Star Wars, long-distance running, podcasts, and family time with his wife and young daughter. He’s also enjoying settling into his new role, noting, “The development team here is so collaborative. We get to work with figures in and out of the University to create game-changing opportunities for students and fulfill supporters’ visions.”
Executive Director of Development for NSM and ECS Michael Karg says, “Alex brings years of fundraising, development, and nonprofit experience that will inform our strategies and strengthen our team. We’re delighted to welcome him to the University and look forward to a bright, successful future for both colleges.”
