An Unparalleled Legacy of Generosity: Dan Black Names Deanship With Transformative $3.5M Gift

From scholarships to state-of-the-art facilities, Dan Black’s philanthropic impact spans decades, shaping the university’s future and honoring the professors who inspired his journey.

Dan Black, a major supporter of the College of Natural Science & Mathematics, was honored with the naming of Dan Black Hall in 2006.

Dan Black’s story begins like that of many Titans–an ambitious student inspired by dedicated professors who helped him shape his dreams. Decades later, his journey of giving back continues to transform lives at Cal State Fullerton. A proud physics graduate from the Class of 1967, Black has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to supporting his alma mater – a testament to his deep appreciation for the education and mentorship he received during his undergraduate years.

This connection reached a new milestone with Black’s recent decision to make an irrevocable a $3.5 million estate gift. The transformative commitment, announced during a private ceremony with CSUF President Ronald S. Rochon, cements Black’s legacy as a pivotal figure in the College of Natural Sciences & Mathematics.

Dean Marie C. Johnson expressed her gratitude for Black’s unwavering support, stating:

“We are all so very grateful. This signing means that effective immediately, the NSM dean will be the Dan Black Dean of the College of Natural Sciences & Mathematics. Future deans will benefit from the endowment distribution funds to be put towards NSM priorities for faculty members, staff, and students.”

This enduring commitment ensures that future generations of NSM students and faculty will benefit from sustained funding to support the college’s highest priorities, including faculty research, innovative student programs, and student scholarships.

A History of Transformative Giving

Black’s relationship with CSUF as a benefactor began more than two decades ago, rooted in his desire to honor the four physics professors he credits with shaping his career and success. “The guidance and inspiration I received as a student changed the course of my life,” Black once said. “This is my way of paying it forward, ensuring that future generations have access to the same transformative opportunities I was fortunate to receive.”

In 1998, Black established the Dan Black Scholarship, an annual scholarship to support physics majors and reduce financial barriers for students pursuing rigorous academic goals. Two years later, recognizing the interdisciplinary potential, he introduced the Dan Black Program in Physics and Business. This program equips physics students with essential business acumen, preparing them to excel in fields that require both technical expertise and entrepreneurial skills.

Black’s philanthropy reached a pinnacle in 2006, when he contributed a record-setting $4.2 million to NSM, the largest single donation ever received by the college at the time. In recognition of this extraordinary gift, the university renamed its Science Laboratory Center to Dan Black Hall. The facility has since become a hub for cutting-edge research and education in disciplines like biology, biochemistry, chemistry, geological sciences, and physics. It serves as a cornerstone of scientific advancement for students and faculty alike.

In addition to these monumental contributions, Black’s support extended to the Nicholas and Lee Begovich Center for Gravitational-Wave Physics and Astronomy (formerly the Gravitational-Wave Physics and Astronomy Center) in 2016. His gift established the Dan Black Director of GWPAC, bolstering research in gravitational-wave astronomy – a field that has revolutionized our understanding of the universe. This gift empowered CSUF to remain at the forefront of scientific discovery, enhancing its reputation as a leader in physics research.

“When I think of the Titans of giving at Cal State Fullerton, Dan is at the front,” says Michael Karg, senior executive director of development at CSUF. “His selfless generosity has empowered our students, advanced research, and elevated our college to excel. The lives he has impacted through his past, present, and future investments will leave an enduring legacy.”

In recent years, Black even contributed to modernize McCarthy Hall, CSUF’s first permanent instructional facility. His donation helped establish the Black Family Terrace, an innovative indoor/outdoor space that has become a favorite space for students to gather for study sessions, collaborative projects, and even casual conversations that spark new ideas.

The Impact of Generosity

Black’s philanthropic efforts have had a profound and lasting mark on the CSUF community. From scholarships and academic programs to research funding and infrastructure, his contributions have enriched every facet of NSM. Through his generosity, Black has empowered thousands of students, supported groundbreaking scientific research, and left an indelible mark on the university that shaped his life.

Karg says, “Dan’s generosity is evident to everyone, but what many may not see are the countless flights he took to Orange County to meet with students over pizza and the unwavering support he provided to deans, faculty, vice presidents, and presidents. It’s impossible to fully capture the impact Dan has had on our college and Cal State Fullerton, but his legacy will endure for generations. We are profoundly grateful for him, and we are all better because we’ve been blessed to know him.”

President Rochon captured the sentiment of the entire CSUF community, saying, “Dan Black embodies the spirit of giving back. His lifelong dedication to CSUF is an inspiration, and his legacy will continue to shape the future of our university for generations to come.”
