“We just want people to know that science is hands-on and it’s for everyone,” Johnson says. “If you want to do it, we’ll support you and provide the resources and the space to succeed.”

As mentors, faculty share their experiences and expertise to help students develop the confidence and skills necessary to achieve their academic, career, and personal goals. For three faculty members in the College of Natural Sciences & Mathematics (NSM), mentorship is as strong a calling as teaching and conducting impactful research.
Along with supporting faculty research and doing investigations on their own, most biological science graduate students teach lower-division lab courses, which takes time away from their studies and research, but carries its own rewards.
